Walton County was established in 1824 from a portion of Escambia County and named for Col. George Walton, secretary of the Territory of West Florida (1821-22) and of the combined territory of Florida (1822-26).
Walton County is in northwest Florida and is bordered by Alabama, the Gulf of Mexico, and Okaloosa, Holmes, Washington, and Bay counties. The county has 82 square miles of water. The highest point in the state (345 feet) is east of Paxton. The average January temperature is 52.8 degrees F, and the average August temperature is 80.8 degrees F.
