Jackson County was established from Escambia County in 1822 and named for Andrew Jackson, governor of the territories of East and West Florida and later president of the U.S. Marianna was the site of a battle in 1864, during which old men and young boys fought against the invasion of Federal forces.
Jackson County is in northwest Florida and is bordered by Holmes, Washington, Calhoun, Gadsden, and Bay counties as well as the states of Georgia and Alabama. Jackson is the only county in Florida to border two states. The county has 13 square miles of water. The average January temperature is 52.6 degrees F, and the average August temperature is 81.0 degrees F. The average annual rainfall is 54.69 inches.
